Events in the city
During the first two days of the school, August 28-29, in L’Aquila will be held the most important cultural-religious festival of the year. This festival, known as Perdonanza Celestiniana, marks the anniversary of the first jubilee of the Catholic Church, instituted in 1294 right here in L’Aquila by pope Celestino V.

Throughout the whole week various religious and cultural events are held during the day and the evening. However, due to deadly earthquake that struck Central Italy on August 24, 2016 (with no consequences in L’Aquila, which is 50 km away from the epicenter), all the entertaining events were cancelled as a sign of respect for the victims.
On August 28, starting at 17:00, a procession with historical characters will walk through the city from the Villa Comunale, ending at 18:00 at the Basilica di Collemaggio, with the Opening Rite of the Holy Door, one the few in the world after that of St. Peter in Rome.
